Overcoming Disappointment
My heart had been heavy for weeks over the unknown of a certain situation in my life, the uncertainty had me with an anxious heart but still with hope of a particular outcome. One week ago today I received my answer, one that left my heart feeling shattered into a million pieces and absolutely devastated. I wasn’t angry, upset, or bitter, the only word I could use to describe how I felt was “disappointed”. What was I disappointed in? That things didn’t work out the way I had thought/hoped that they would and if I’m being honest, I was also a little disappointed in myself wondering if there was more I could’ve done even though deep down I know there wasn’t.
Maybe you just had a relationship end, maybe you didn’t get the job you were hoping for, maybe you’re not where you thought you’d be in life right now, if you’re currently in a time of disappointment too I’m so sorry you’re walking through this. My prayer is that by the time you finish reading this you’re left with hope, the heaviness in your heart has lifted, and you allow Jesus to come in and heal you.
Disappointment: sadness or displeasure caused by the nonfulfillment of ones hopes or expectations.
If you’re like me and what is causing disappointment is something that you have been praying and believing for I want to encourage you with Psalms 84:11 which says that “God will not withhold any GOOD thing from you”. Think about it…whether it’s a relationship, job, house, etc., if it’s good for you God will not withhold it from you! It may not be good for you right now, maybe there are still things He’s working out, but when it’s good He will give it to you, and if not…He has something even better! God is constant and consistent. With Him we always know that the outcome will be for our good, we’ll have victory, and He will exceed our expectations. We just don’t always know the details or every step of the journey, which He honestly does for our benefit. In Him there is no disappointment, it only comes from our hopes and expectations not being met the way we thought they would or should.
Remember, His ways and His thoughts are higher than ours. He knows what we don’t know and He sees what we don’t see.
“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts’, says the Lord. ‘And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heaves are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.’” -Isaiah 55:8-9
AND, His promise is that whatever is bringing you disappointment will eventually bring life. Check out this verse in Isaiah:
“Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow. Where nettles grew, myrtles will sprout up. These events will bring great honor to the Lord’s name; they will be an everlasting sign of His power and love.” -Isaiah 55:13
I wanted to know the significance of what this was symbolizing and an article on myrtleandcypress.com explained it beautifully…
- Thorns represent a dry wilderness, the Word says they will turn into cypress trees. Cypress trees represent healing, uprightness, evergreen, eternal life, long living, able to endure harsh climates and poor soil.
- Nettles represent lack and drought, the Word says myrtles will sprout up in its place. Myrtles represent a slow growing, fragrant tree that is always green with big beautiful blossoms and a strong root system. Even when its cut to a stump, it’s roots cause it to spout again.
THAT BETTER GET YOU EXCITED! Look at how God will turn it around for your good!
God promises that what is behind you is nothing compared to what He’s going to do. He makes all things new! He will make a way in the wilderness and create rivers where its been dry.
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” -Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)
He promises that no matter what, He will take it all (no matter how bad it seems right now), and work it for your good.
- Even when you don’t know what to pray or even when your heart is so disappointed that you can’t get the words out, Holy Spirit will intercede for you.
“And in a similar way, the Holy Spirit takes hold of us in our human frailty to empower us in our weakness. For example, at times we don’t even know how to pray, or know the best things to ask for. But the Holy Spirit rises up within us to super-intercede on our behalf, pleading to God with emotional sighs to deep for words.” – Romans 8:26 (TPT)
- He wants better for you than you want for yourself. Make His desires your desires and even then, He will exceed your expectation.
“God, the searcher of the heart, knows fully our longing, yet He also understands the desires of the Spirit, because the Holy Spirit passionately pleads before God for us, his holy ones, in perfect harmony with God’s plan and our destiny.” -Romans 8:27 (TPT)
- Not one moment, situation, or season is wasted. Even if it doesn’t seem good right now, you have a promise that it will be.
“So we are convinced that every detail of our lives is continually woven together to fit into God’s perfect plan of bringing good into our lives, for we are His lovers who have been called to fulfill His designed purpose.” -Romans 8:28 (TPT)
I feel like I could keep going and write a book on this haha but I’ll leave you with one last thing…I want you to know that you’re not alone, Jesus is so with you in your disappointment, in your heartbreak, in your sadness, allow Him to come in and heal you. He doesn’t want you to stay there, you will get through this even though it may not feel like it right now…
Proverbs 13:12 (MSG) says “Unrelenting disappointment leaves you heartsick, but a sudden good break can turn life around.”
I want to speak over you that YOUR GOOD BREAK IS COMING! At the perfect time. Exceedingly and abundantly all you can ask, think, or imagine. Keep seeking Him and loving Him. Get ready to give God so much glory! I love you and I’m praying for you!
